Grip It and Rip It: Applying Griptape to Your Skateboard Deck

You just bought a brand new Starbird skateboard deck and now it’s time to add some grip. Applying griptape to your Starbird skateboard is an essential step to ensure maximum control and stability while riding on the streets or hitting the skatepark. This guide will take you through the process of applying griptape the Starbird way.

What You’ll Need

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of griptape application, let’s gather all the necessary tools:

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Find a clean, flat surface to work on. You don’t want any dirt or debris getting trapped under the griptape. Plus, a clutter-free workspace will help you focus on the task at hand. Wipe the deck down with a clean towel if needed.

Step 2: Check the Placement

To grip your skateboard, start by rolling out the griptape and placing it on top of the deck. Take a moment to think about the way you want it to look, so you don’t end up with a crooked or incorrectly sized grip. If your grip has graphics, make sure they are facing the way you want them. It may seem like a small step, but taking the time to do this properly will pay off in the long run.

Pro tip: To add a little extra steeze to your grip job, you can add cutouts or do a fully custom design with pieces of griptape. Let your creativity run wild!

Step 3: Apply the Griptape

With your griptape sheet cut to size, it’s time to peel off the backing. Start at one end and slowly remove the backing, exposing the sticky side of the griptape. Be gentle to avoid any wrinkles or creases.

Once the backing is off, align the griptape with the deck, making sure it covers the entire surface. Take your time to get it centered and positioned just right. Remember, this is your canvas, so make it look good!

When you’re happy with the placement, start by applying pressure to the center of the griptape and work your way outwards. This will help eliminate any air bubbles and ensure a smooth, secure bond. You can use your hands or a skate tool to press down firmly.

Step 4: Trim the Excess

Now that the griptape is securely attached to your skateboard deck, it’s time to trim the excess.

Use your screwdriver or skate tool to score the edges of the deck on the griptape. Score all around the deck, taking special care on all the curves and in the pocket. This presses the edges of the griptape firmly onto the board, so that nothing can get under and raise the tape. The white line will serve as a guide when cutting.

Use your utility knife or griptape cutter to carefully trim along the edges of the deck. Slant the blade towards the top of the deck to make a smoother cut. Again, take your time and make precise cuts to achieve a clean finish.

Step 5: Smooth it Out

To ensure a seamless grip, take a piece of the griptape trimmings and sand the edges of the griptape down smooth. Once you’re satisfied with the grip and the griptape is smooth, give it a final press down to ensure a strong bond with the deck.

If you want to go the extra mile, grab your hairdryer or heat gun and gently warm up the griptape. This will make it more pliable and allow you to smooth out any remaining wrinkles or imperfections. Be careful not to overheat the griptape, as that will cause it to bubble or peel and you’ll have to start fresh with another sheet of grip.

Step 6: Test it Out

Now that your griptape application is complete, it’s time to take your skateboard for a spin. Head to your favorite spot and test out the new grip. Feel the control and stability as you carve, ollie, and kickflip your way to skateboarding glory!

Keep your board dry to increase your grip’s lifespan. If it gets dirty, don’t worry – some people believe that dirt helps their board feel better. However, if it’s too dirty for your taste, you can use grip gum or sander cleaner to remove any built-up mud.

Remember, practice makes perfect. It may take a few sessions to get used to the new grip, but soon enough, you’ll be ripping it up like a pro.

So, there you have it! By following these steps, you’ll be able to apply griptape to your skateboard deck with confidence. Now, go out there and show off your sick grip job to your fellow skaters. Stay safe, have fun, and keep pushing!
